TurboScan app vs Konica Minolta C450i document digitization

In this entry I'll be comparing the digitization of a bunch of documents:

  • Number of pages: 116
  • Paper size: A4
  • Paper colors: blue / black / white
  • Digitization colorpace: black/white or grayscale (up to software or hardware to decide)

Two hardware systems will be used in parallel for digitization, and compare the results afterwards.

Hardware 1:

  • Phone: Samsung Galaxy S10 with Exynos
  • App: TurboScan Pro 1.6.3
    • Auto page size enabled
    • Default PDF size: A4
    • Attachment file size: larger
    • Flash during AF
    • Auto page size
    • Image source: camera (not already taken pictures)
    • Flash activated
    • Touch the screen just before taking the picture for autofocus
    • Palette type: B/W (there's also Color and Photo)
    • Black intensity: 4/5 (there are 5 intensity levels for B/W). The most intense picks up too much noise
    • Output format (only one, default): JPG
  • Daytime: day
  • Technical results:
    • Number of jpg files: 116
    • Total jpeg size: 91.6 MB (96,089,325 bytes)
    • .properties file size: 144 bytes
    • App runtime: 40 minutes roughly
    • Share/export - Send as PDF
    • PDF size: 101.2 MB (96,152,347 bytes)
    • PDF Page size: 8,26 x 11,69 in
    • PDF version: 1.4

Hardware 2:

  • Professional printer and scanner: Konica Minolta bizhub C450i
  • Technical results:
    • Using the auto document feeder
    • Color palette output: grayscale
    • File format output: PDF (version 1.4)
    • PDF size: 9.53 MB (9,991,726 bytes)
    • PDF Page size: 8,27 x 11,69 in
    • Time to scan: a couple of minutes maybe

 Results:

- The pages scanned by the Minolta are almost totally flat. You can still appreciate some marks of waviness by the place the paper was folded, and the text and lines are a little bit bent there, but still looks a very flat paper with no distortion in the dimensions. On the other hand, it's grayscale, so the image looks much softer, and there are certain halos of ink around the letters and lines. Certainly blurs a lot some letters like p or q.

- The pages scanned by TurboScan are black/white and have much higher contrast. On the other size, due to the pages have been folded before, it's quite hard to flatten folded paper, and since it's resting on a surface when the pictures are taken, still rises a bit in certain places and creases stand out. Text and lines are more bent in folding places, but still it's a very good document.

The folds that are noticeable are those which have 3 layers of paper, since it's not sharp/hard folded, but instead by a quite big radius and way more difficult to bend straight. For example, fold the A4 in a Z Fold (concertina) (like a A4 Tri Fold Leaflets), then put it into an envelope, then half fold it again by the middle like to put it into a small pocket. That middle line is the one that really stands out after the scan since it's almost impossible to bend it straight.
